Varanasi, often referred to as Benaras, Banaras, or Kashi, is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh that dates back to the 11th century B.C. It is located on the banks of the Ganga River. regarded as Indian spiritual capital. It is the holiest of the seven sacred towns in both Jainism and Hinduism and a prominent centre of religion in India. Hindu pilgrims come to the city to perform funeral rites and take holy baths in the Ganges River. There are almost 2,000 temples in the city, including Kashi Vishwanath, the "Golden Temple," which is devoted to the Hindu god Shiva. Varanasi developed into a significant industrial hub known for its art, fragrances, ivory carvings, and muslim and silk fabrics. When Buddha delivered his first sermon, "The Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dharma," at nearby Sarnath in 528 BCE, it is thought that he established Buddhism in this region. When Adi Shankara made Shiva worship an official sect of Varanasi in the eighth century, its religious significance further increased. The city remained to be a significant hub for Hindu devotion, pilgrimage, mysticism, and poetry throughout the Muslim era through the Middle Ages, which boosted its standing as a significant hub for culture and religious instruction. In Varanasi, Tulsidas authored the epic poem Ram Charit Manas about the life of Rama. The Ramnagar Fort, near the eastern bank of the Ganges, was built in the 18th century in the Mughal style of architecture with carved balconies, open courtyards, and scenic pavilions. Among the estimated 23,000 temples in Varanasi are Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Shiva, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, and the Durga Temple. The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. An educational and musical centre, many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in the city, and it was the place where the Benares gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed. One of Asias largest residential universities is Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The Hindi-language nationalist newspaper, Aj, was first published in 1920.
